A Very Warm Welcome Awaits You At .....
The Highwayman’s Haunt
Exeter Road, Chudleigh, Devon, TQ13 0DE     Telephone:  01626 853250
Welcome.  This attractive and historic thatched Inn was built during the reign of the Plantagenet King Edward I (Longshanks), 1239-1307.  Formally a farm known as ‘Rowhill’ - Saxon for ‘rough hill’ - the building was the reputed hideout of the notorious local highwayman,                            .  During the English Civil war it was also used to quarter Cromwellian Cavalry under the command of General Fairfax prior to their attack on Baron Clifford’s Royalist forces at Ugbrooke.

The older, thatched and heavily timbered part of the building is steeped in atmosphere and may even be home to a friendly ghost known as ‘Emily’.  With its low beams, oak screens and open fireplaces, one with a fine example of an original bread oven, this old part of the Inn transports diners back in history.  You can only wonder at the stories the walls may hold!
