About us
Husband and wife team, Steve and Jane took over as owners/caretakers of this historical Devon thatched tavern in April 2011.
Steve, being the designer, builder, carpenter, and landscaper, with a perfect eye for detail will be taking on the task of renovating this impressive tavern. Over the past 10 years, Steve has taken on projects in countries where Jane has been working. Building the family hill top home in Southern Spain, renovating a water mill in France and most recently designing and building a replica Dutch barge on the river Thames. After the Tsunami in 2004, Steve joined Jane in Sri Lanka and designed and built a village of 104 homes to re-house over 1000 displaced people.
Jane has been in the Hospitality industry all her working life, working her way around the world, learning new and interesting cultures, hopefully bringing an eclectic mix of eating and socializing experiences to the pub.
Jane will be heading up the Front of House team, along with her daughter Jessie and son-in-law Mike. The kitchen is lead by Matai, our head Chef.
The History
The notorious Highwayman, Jack Witherington, used this house as his ‘hide-out’, until he was captured on the 1st April 1691, whilst hiding in the houses main chimneybreast. The house was granted a public license in 1968, where good food, great wine and a friendly welcome have been enjoyed, in an atmosphere, which can only be privileged in such historical surroundings. Over the years there have been several owners, who have all had the fortune of making their own mark in the history of this wonderful house, Steve and Jane are the latest in this tradition.
